As the disturbing reports come in every day about Iraqis killing each other, even during the holy month of Ramadan, it is hard to disagree with Queen Elizabeth’s statement:
“One matter touches me so near as I may not overskip; religion is the ground on which all other matters ought to take root, and being corrupted may mar all the tree. . . .”
The terrible situation throughout the Middle East has its roots in religion—in Israel, it is an issue of Muslims versus Jews, and in Iraq, the fighting pits Muslim against Muslim. Although the people who commit the attacks often claim to be acting in the name of their religion, it is clear that neither Judaism nor Islam promotes or even condones murder and violence. The corruption of religious tenets by militants has apparently marred the tree to which Elizabeth referred and has placed a severe strain on all other matters, from politics to social interaction, just as Elizabeth warned.
