“You that be lieutenants and gentlemen of command in your countries [regions within the nation], I would require to take care and special order that the people be well and thoroughly armed, and that in readiness upon all present occasions. You that be judges and justices of peace, I command and straitly charge that you see the laws to be made, and those already made, to be duly executed; and that you make them living laws when we have put life into them.”
- Queen Elizabeth I of England may have died over four hundred years ago, but her spirit lives on in the many writings she left behind. During her long reign (1558–1603), Elizabeth demonstrated brilliant leadership as she dealt with many of the problems politicians still face today. Perhaps the wisdom that can be found in her recorded words may help modern people navigate the treacherous waters of international and domestic politics.
